I just edited the SI prefix "peta" for the first time. Trying to explain to elementary school readers that this is "1 million billion". That's a 1 followed by 15 zeros. —FIFTEEN ZEROES— My mind kind of shut off after 9 zeros.

Is there any evidence (or even valued expert opinion) as to whether a percent or fraction is easier for "an average person" (Gr 8 reading level) to understand? Especially when it comes to very small proportions like 0.5% (1/200th). #amEditing

Reviewer sometimes want us to "smooth out the language." Copy editors know those suggestions mean raising the reading level about 8 grades above the average. Making reading hard adds friction to info. "54% of adults [in the USA] have a literacy below a 6th-grade level (20% are below 5th-grade)."
