My guest post today appears on the Editors’ Weekly, the blog of the Editors’ Association of Canada. In “This Book Contains Canadian Spelling,” I ask if we copy editors should preserve Canadian spellings since no publishers are recording these preferences anymore (no Canadian dictionary) and that unfamiliar spellings can prompt readers to post negative reviews based on perceived “misspellings.”
It feels like only educational materials are maintaining Canadian spelling preferences. And that’s just because the ministries of education require it.
Is it a dying battle?
